Just a few thoughts about last night’s victories for both Republicans and Democrats in Arkansas, California, South Carolina, and Nevada. Already much has been said about the “Tea Party candidates” in South Carolina and Nevada. First of all, most of the people I’ve met at Tea Parties (and I’ve attended eight of them) are Americans who are fed up with political parties and the elitists who run them. They are disgusted with irresponsible taxation and spending, career politicians who vote on bills they don’t even read, and a bloated Federal Government that looks and acts more like the “blob” from the old 1950′s science fiction movie. Most, but not all, “tea partiers” are pro-life. And these people take seriously the threats of the Islamic-fascists, the communists in China, North Korea, and Venezuela, as well as the threat of illegal immigration.
That being said, it is encouraging to see Ms. Angle win in Nevada, and Ms. Haley victorious in South Carolina. However, remember that these are merely primaries. Ms. Angle is facing Senator Harry Reid–and he is no “new kid on the block.” He will be a formidable opponent. One victory today in a primary does not automatically translate into victory in November.
One more thought: Senator Blanche Lincoln squeaked out a victory yesterday over the hard-left Lt. Gov. Bill Halter in the Democrat primary. No doubt many will trump this victory by the Senator from Arkansas as a repudiation of the “anti-incumbent” fervor of the nation. However, what this proves is an “anti-hard left” attitude of many against the current Congress. The Democrats in Arkansas had a choice between Lincoln who is more moderate, and Halter who is a carbon copy of the leftist policies of Pelosi and Reid. The Dems in Arkansas chose a moderate. Imagine that. They rejected the candidate heavily funded and promoted by the unions, George Soros, and the current Administration. Seems to me that that proves the Democrats in Arkansas don’t want a committed hard-leftist to represent them.
